Synopsis
Block, an American financial services and digital payments company, completed the acquisition of Afterpay, an Australian financial technology company, for $29bn. "Block and Afterpay have a shared purpose. We built our business to make the financial system more fair, accessible, and inclusive, and Afterpay has built a trusted brand aligned with those principles. Together, we can better connect our Cash App and Seller ecosystems to deliver even more compelling products and services for merchants and consumers, putting the power back in their hands," Jack Dorsey, Block CEO. On December 14, 2021, Afterpay claims that the acquisition got overwhelming support from shareholders, with 99.79% of the proxy votes cast in favour of the deal. On January 11, 2022, Afterpay's $29bn buyout by Block set to close after Spain nod.
